AGM Sports will partner Global Tennis Legacy Foundation to help tennis student athletes all over the world

AGM Sports achieved a new agreement with Global Tennis Legacy Foundation (GTLF) an international organization directed by Chris Vermeeren, a sports businessman with more than 20 years of experience in amateur and professional tennis. GTLF creates individualized programs for tennis student-athletes to help them pursuing their athletic goals.

With this new agreement, AGM Sports will be assisting tennis student athletes referred by any of the tens of tennis academies linked to GTLF looking forward to continue playing tennis while they study a college degree. On the other hand, AGM Sports will look for tennis student-athletes that could take advantage of the services of GTLF in Spain.

GTLF headquarters are located in the Netherlands but it will also be represented by AGM Sports in its main offices at Saragossa. .

These athletes join more than 200 Spaniards studying and competing in College

The American College Sports System welcomes more than fifty new Spanish student-athletes, rising the number of Spaniards in collegiate sports up to two hundred. Most of these students are already taking advantage of the American educational system. Meanwhile just a few of them are getting ready their luggage for their upcoming journey.

All of them will be able to combine high level sports with undergraduate studies. Besides being able to combine both activities, these athletes are financing their education with partial or full scholarships awarded thanks to their academic and athletic merits.

The sports offering more scholarships opportunities for Spanish student-athletes are tennis, soccer (including women's soccer), athletics, swimming, skiing and golf.

John Isner, ranked 19th in the ATP Tour answers our questions about his years in tennis college

John Isner (Greensboro, North Carolina) is an American professional tennis player. His current and best ATP ranking is 19th place. He is well-known for his powerful service and great height (2'06 m). Isner had a successful tennis career at the University of Georgia from 2003-2007. In his first year was runner-up in doubles of the NCAA. He led Georgia to the category of runner-up team in the NCAA championship in 2006 before leading the team to the victory in the Championship in 2007.

AGM: John, in Spain is unthinkable to have a sports star going to university, but you are 19 in the ATP rankings, and you have 4 years of college education behind you. Allow me to ask you a few questions, so that people can understand the decisions you have made.

AGM: When did you play your first professional match?
JI: My first ATP match was in 2007, at the Hall of Fame Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.

AGM: Was this too late? Or you think you should have started playing professionally before going to college?
JI: In my opinion, I do not believe I started too late. When I left high school I simply was not good enough to turn pro and absolutely had to go to college. I wasn't fully ready to turn pro until my junior year in college when I was 21 years old.

AGM: How was your experience at the University of Georgia and in college tennis?
JI: My experience at UGA was seriously the best time of my life. Everything about the University is absolutely amazing and I fell in love with Athens, GA the very first time I stepped on the campus. Playing collegiately for UGA made the college experience even better. It´s one of the top programs in the country hands down and being able to learn under Coach Diaz for 4 years was invaluable to my success. College tennis always brought the competitor out in me and it made me so much more mentally tough which has been huge for my success in the pros.

AGM: Can you compare college tennis, especially the NCAA’s finals in Athens, Georgia, with anything on the professional tour?
JI: The only thing I can compare NCAA's in Athens to is Davis Cup. The way the fans get into it in Athens is very similar to that of Davis Cup. I still believe that NCAA's in Athens was the craziest atmosphere I have ever played in. The fans are a lot crazier than the fans on the pro tour and even the fans in Davis Cup. Being able to play for UGA in May during the NCAA's was an absolute honor.

AGM: Are there many college players on the ATP Tour?
JI: Out of the top 100 players in the World there are less than 10 that played college tennis. The most notable players are James Blake (Harvard), Benjamin Becker (Baylor), and probably myself.

AGM: Do you recommend good players to pursue a college education and go to a university in the United States, even if it’s just for a couple of years?
JI: I absolutely think that all players, no matter how good they are, should at least attend a US university for a couple years. Male players tend to develop a lot later than females and a few years of college tennis will do just about every player a lot of good. That´s where I started to see noticeable gains in my game and if not for my experience at UGA, I would not be where I am today.

Xicu Colomar excited with his new challenge in the United States

Xicu Colomar, Playas de Castellon, finished a great season being #4 in the Spanish National Championship (400 hurdles). Colomar is having some rest in Ibiza before flying to the United States next August 13th. She has already completed her two first years of Engineering at Boise State University (Idaho) where she played tennis. Ignacio, a 5-foot-11 freshman from Soria, Spain, earned All-The Sun Conference honors in both cross country and track and field this season. In cross country, Lazaro, who holds the top five times in the 8,000-meter run in university history, set the all-time mark at the Blue Hose Invitational as he won the event in a time of 25:59. Lazaro was also one of two SCAD runners that competed in the NAIA National Championship and finished in 114th place out of 323 runners.

During the spring track season, Lazaro set the university mark in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:07.37, good for third place at the conference meet. He also qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship, which will be held May 27-29 in Marian, Ind.

Javier Garrapiz (Huesca, Spain), nationally ranked #22 and #1 player of his team, won his singles and doubles games opening the way to the final victory. His performance in the singles game was brilliant and after losing the first set, he defeated his adversary winning the second one in the Tie Break and the last one, 6-3. The final score was, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3.

During his first year at North Carolina Wesleyan College Jorge has been enjoying the experience of being a student-athlete in the United States. He receives a scholarship to compete for the men's soccer team and at the same time he continues with his college education studying a degree in Economics.

Aragon TV visited Jorge to show us his daily activities such as attending to class, practicing or hanging out with friends. The TV Show also presented Javier Castrillo, another soccer student-athlete from Spain in North Carolina.

Sophomore Jaime Pulgar was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference men's tennis team, which was announced on Thursday, April 22. Pulgar, who is currently ranked No. 67 in the country had an impressive season for the Wolfpack. Playing at the No. 1 singles throught the year, Pulgar went 14-9 and 6-5 in the ACC. His wins include beating No. 5 Guillermo Gomez of Georgia Tech, No. 38 Yoann Re of Virginia Tech, No. 48 Diego Cubas of South Carolina, and No. 50 Jason Jung of Michigan. Pulgar also went 14-8 in doubles matches, playing mainly at the No. 2 and No. 3 spot.This is the fifth straight year a player from men's tennis has made the All-ACC team.

Ester Bosch finishes with success, on and off the pool, her years in the United States

Ester Bosch, swimmer from Barcelona that has represented Cal University in Pennsylvania, is another example of the success Spanish student-athletes are having at American universities. Ester has just finished participating in swimming competitions, receiving All-American honors in different events (4x200 Free Relay,100 Free and 4 x 50 Free Relay) at the 2010 NCAA II Championships. She will finish her classes in May with an MBA in May. Ester has been a reference for the team not only as a leader in the swimming pool but also as a mentor or “big sister” to the younger women on the team.

The Cadena Ser Radio Sports section interviewed Pepe Salama, soccer student-athlete from Adarve soccer club. Pepe has just committed to Brown University, located in Providence (Rhode Island), where he is going start his University studies while he keeps competing at a high level.

In the interview Pepe tells about his expectations of the new life he will have in one of the best universities in the world in terms of academics and sports. Brown is one of the eight private universities that belong to the prestigious Ivy League. Pepe will be side by side with athletes and students from universities such as Harvard, Yale or Princeton among others.

Tennis player Alvaro Morcillo has been featured on digital newspaper HOY. Several athletes from Asturias are studying in U.S. colleges with athletic scholarships. Studying in America will bring many benefits to these students, since they will get a college degree, learn English and enjoy the great professionalism in sports.

The newspaper Qué! Asturias published an article on the possibilities and advantages of finding scholarships in the American system, in order to study a degree and in the meanwhile compete in sports. Jaime Villa leads men´s Cross Country team of Drury University

When it comes to men´s Cross Country at Drury University, one of the referents of the team is, without doubt, Jaime Villa. The Spaniard won for the second straight year the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships. Some days later, in the NCAA-II Midwest Regional Championship, he finished in the 2nd position and thanks to this he qualified to the NCAA-II National Championship, where he represented his university for the 2nd year in a row.

Virginia Egusquiza Athlete of the Month in October and Player of the Year

The game statistics that Virginia has achieved in her two first years at Rider University in New Jersey have brought to her numerous awards. If in her first year she was already named Rookie of the Year, in her second she has been awarded Athlete of the Month in October and Player of the Year in the Field Hockey University Team.
Her numbers, and not just in October, but throughout the season are amazing, scoring 10 goals and giving 17 assists, and being the 4th in the nation in assists. She already ranks 16th on Rider's all-time scoring list in just 2 years.

USAO wins Sooner Athletic Conference

University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma has won for the first time in its history the Soccer Sooner Athletic Conference.
Alvar Rodriguez arrived to Oklahoma some months ago, and as all other international students, Alvar had to adapt to his new life, studies and the team… but after that, the Madrilenian Soccer player has ended up being an important part of this succeed playing in the initial roster of the last games, scoring 8 goals and giving 8 assists during the season.
The team is facing the play-offs to try to reach the Soccer Nationals of the NAIA league.
Alvar is enjoying to the maximum the experience that the American System is giving to him because he can combine soccer and his studies in Physics, although this great experience is very exigent in every aspect that are around it.

Irene is in Graceland University, at the state of Iowa, studying a major in Business Administration. She is getting brilliant academic marks, which have given her different honorific awards in the university, such as the “President´s List” which is only for students who accomplish a 4.0 GPA. Moreover she has received new scholarships thanks to her grades, like the Graceland Academic Scholarship or the Mark Starr Scholarship, when she did a research paper about Free Market.But there is more to say about her, because at the Volleyball Courts she is also performing at a high level, and last October her team won a tournament held in Ashford University.

Carlos Bes from Embry-Riddle received recognition at the NAIA National Championship banquet on May 9th. The banquet took place at Battleship Park, home of the USS Alabama, and recognized regional and national honorees in men’s and women’s tennis for the 2009 season. Bes Comeras was tabbed as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s NAIA Senior Men’s Player of the Year.

Carlos has also gotten the job done in the classroom. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering earning NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete honors

Spanish female swimmers from California University of Pennsylvania find success

Teresa Hernandez-Berdú and Ester Bosch, both members of the 400 freestyle relay team, set a school record at the NCAA Championships. The relay team posted a time of 3:28.37 receiving All-America Honorable Mention. As an individual, Bosch also received All-America Honorable Mention in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.60 seconds.

1st Academic & Athletic Meeting - AGM Sports in Mexico

Last March the company AGM Sports visited Mexico. Our international representatives Guillermo Zamarripa and Oscar Gonzalez were there for a period of two weeks with the purpose of presenting the unique American College Sport System and to promote sports. Such event included six soccer camps, four conferences, a variety of lectures for students, and some community service.

33 student-athletes who competed at American Colleges during 2007-2008 collected 41 medals at the Summer Olympic Games in Beijing; 12 Gold medals, 19 Silver medals and 10 Bronze medals.

Some of these student-athletes are international students that are training and competing at American universities. Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil, Slovenia, Bahamas, Russia and/or Australia are countries that have won at least one medal thanks to the athletes that study, train and compete in the United States.

38 student-athletes have started their studies in the US in the last couple of weeks. With them, AGM Sports has helped more than 100 student-athletes in the last 4 years, coming from 15 different countries around the world.

Most of the student-athletes we have helped have chosen an academic career in Business, followed by Engineering and Science Degrees. With regards to the sports they play in the United States, tennis is the sport with the highest number of students, followed by golf, swimming, soccer and track and field. Other athletes that have taken advantage of the American College System have received scholarships because of their talent playing basketball, fencing, field hockey and even Synchronized Swimming.

For the Spring Semester of 2009, AGM Sports is already working with 20 international student-athletes.

AGM Sports Reports – How to choose the perfect university

More than 1,000 universities in the United States are offering athletic scholarships to international students. Before making a decision, it is important to evaluate each case, to understand what the best option is for each individual student-athlete.

Each student-athlete will have to choose from the options he/she has, and make a final decision based on his/her needs:

Decisions based on athletics – Student-athletes that want to continue practicing and competing at the highest level, with the objective of turning professional once they finish their college career. Only the best athletes will have the ability to choose between the best schools in the US, and scholarships might not be full, as the best sports programs might have to share their scholarships amongst all the student-athletes in the team.

Decisions based on academics – For student-athletes that use their athletic skills in order to be admitted into universities of high international reputation. At great academic institutions admissions standards are very high and is very difficult to be accepted because of the number of applications they receive. Student-athletes that receive interest from these academic institutions have to comply with the academic requirements of those universities, but don’t have to compete in admissions with the rest of the applicants.

Decision based on financials – Other student-athletes don’t have the financial means to pay for any part of their education in the United States, so their decision is based on the higher scholarship they receive, from wherever it comes. The higher the academic/athletic level of the university, the better, but the only objective is to find a university where the student-athlete will be able to get a college degree.

A fourth element, complying with rules – There are some student-athletes that don’t have many options of finding a university in the United States because they don’t comply with age, amateurism or eligibility rules. These student-athletes must find a way to comply with these complex rules, and their options might be limited to just a handful of universities because of their unique and special situations.

The Road to the London 2012 Olympic Games has started

We are very happy to be helping student-athletes that have a clear goal on the Olympic Games of London 2012. Many of these young men and women, especially in track and swimming, have already started their years in college with this goal in mind; we are sure their experiences in college sports will help them to reach the London Games.

AGM Sports signed an agreement this past June with the Portuguese Olympic Committee, in order to help their athletes with their sports careers in the United States, while they start a college degree. We are in conversations with other Olympic National Committess, with the hope of replicating the Portuguese model in other countries across the globe.

Agreement with the Portuguese Olympic Committee

AGM Sports has signed an agreement with the Portuguese Olympic Committee, in order to help athletes enrolled at Portuguese Olympic programs to continue with their studies in the United States while they continue on practicing at the highest level.

The agreement has been signed at the CO in Lisbon, between representative members of the Olympic Committee, and directors and managers in Portugal of AGM Sports. A second agreement was signed with the Association of track and field athletes of Portugal.

Assistance Program from the Fundación Bancaja

12 Spanish student-athletes are meeting all academic requirements to get financial help from the Fundación Bancaja, and will be joined by 48 more by the end of this year. These students have also accepted scholarships offers from different universities, and will start college in the United States in August.

Financial help given by the Foundation will be assigned to student-athletes in several sports. To date, these sports are: tennis (3 female and 3 male), golf (1 female and 3 male), track and field (1 female) and field hockey (1 female).

Javier Garrapiz won the NCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championships, representing the University of Georgia. Alberto Romea, at the same time, won the NAIA Men’s Tennis Championships, representing Auburn Montgomery University, in Alabama.

Carlos Bes – Our best student-athlete

We are very proud of Carlos Bes, a clear example of what a student-athlete should be like. Carlos has finished his 3rd year at Embry-Riddle University, located in the north of Florida. His tennis team has finished in third position in the nation, competing in NAIA, with Carlos as an important part of his tennis team, playing at positions 2 and 3.

Besides his good work on the tennis court, Carlos has maintained a GPA of 3.915, studying Software Engineering. It is important to mention that Embry-Riddle is the most important university in the United States in some fields of Engineering, and that his students work for companies like NASA or Boeing when they graduate from school.

Congratulations Carlos on such a good job.

On May 16, the athletic scholarship program of Fundacion Bancaja was featured on the TV program called “Aqui hay trabajo”, where it explained the requisites to take advantage of these scholarships. This TV program is financed by different organizations that belong to the Spanish government, and give information and opportunities to students and people looking for a professional career.

Bancaja offers 60 scholarships for Spanish student-athletes going to American universities

The objective of this program is, according to this organization, “to help young students with their academic and sports careers, something they will be able to do during their years in the United States”. The athletic scholarships, offered by American universities, in average cover 80% of the full cost of attending an American university, and in some cases cover 100% of the costs, including tuition, fees, books, housing and meals. The amount of the scholarship received varies on each student, depending on their academic and athletic skills. The Fundacion Bancaja will add some financial help to the athletic scholarship already given by the university, with a value of 1.000 Euros per student-athlete.

In order to apply for this financial help, the students must be residents of Spain, must have finished (or be about to finish) high-school, be a college student with a determined number of credits passed, have the required English level in order to pass the SAT and the TOEFL exams, and prove a high-enough athletic level in order to quality for athletic scholarships in the United States, in the sports of track and field, basketball, soccer, golf, swimming, tennis, volleyball and others.

Aragon Regional Champion, Teresa Nogues, will play and study at the University of Texas El Paso

Teresa Nogués, 19 year-old Spanish golfer, has signed an athletic scholarship with the University of Texas El Paso, university where Teresa will go next August in order to play collegiate golf and start with her college education. The golfer of the Club de Golf Guara, in Northern Spain, has been provincial and regional champion in all junior and senior categories. With her decision, Teresa will continue on improving her golf career, thanks to the professional training she will receive at UTEP. Teresa will train 4 hours on a daily basis, and will travel around the United States representing the golf team of her university.

The University of Texas El Paso, with over 20,000 students, is in the city of El Paso, in the border of Mexico, in the State of Texas.

Spanish Swimmers find success in the National Championships in NCAA Division II

March 16 – The finals of the Swimming National Championships in NCAA Division II had the presence of two Spanish swimmers, Eunate Alcantarilla, swimming for Drury University, and Ester Bosch, doing it for California University.

Eunate was the runner-up on two different events, and also ended up as a winner in other relay events. Her University finished in second place, not being able to win back-to-back National Championships. Ester, in her first year in the United States, beat all pool and university records, and finished with the seventh place at different races in the National Championship finals

AGM Sports gets local presence in Argentina

AGM Sports has announced a partnership with Argentinean company Gaudi Business Group, firm that will be helping Argentinean student-athletes in finding athletic scholarships in the United States. Argentine is the country with the greatest sports potential in Latin America, so both companies expect to find student-athletes in sports like tennis, soccer, basketball, field hockey or even golf.

Gaudi Business Group is led by Ricardo Gonzalez Maurer and Gustavo Marcaccio. Gustavo personally knows the advantages of collegiate sports in America, as he received a tennis scholarship at Arizona State University. He continued playing professionally after his years in the United States, and has played at many tournaments of the ATP Tour.

Virginia Espejo Finishes Second at USA Jaguar Invitational

Mobile, Ala. - Freshman Virginia Espejo shot a final round 73 to finish in second place at the USA Jaguar Invitational, hosted by South Alabama at the Azalea City Golf Club in Mobile, Ala. On the first day of the competition, Virginia also shot a round of 73, which took her to the second position in this tournament.

Thanks to her performance, Virginia helped her team of the University of Southern Mississippi to a second place finish in the team competition, as well. The native of Madrid, Spain posted her second top ten finish of the spring. Espejo also finished in a tie for tenth at the Baja Invitational.

Javier Garrapiz Sweeps SEC Men's Tennis Weekly Awards

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Georgia freshman tennis player Javier Garrapiz (Huesca, Spain) has been named both the SEC Player of the Week and the SEC Freshman of the Week, announced the Southeastern Conference office Thursday. Georgia’s newest addition to the lineup posted three wins last weekend, including a match-clinching victory against Ole Miss Sunday, March 2.

In last week’s matches, Garrapiz went a perfect six-for-six, winning three singles and three doubles contests. The most important win of the weekend came against No. 19 Robbye Poole, the highest-ranked player on an Ole Miss squad that entered the match in Athens rated No. 4. The Spanish international topped Poole in the third singles position, 6-4, 6-3, to clinch Georgia’s win over the Rebels. The clinch was the first of the Garrapiz’s career.

Garrapiz is currently 13-1 overall since joining the Bulldogs in January, and is a perfect 11-0 in dual matches. All of Garrapiz’s 13 wins have come in straight sets, with his only loss of the year coming in a three-set battle. He has not dropped a single set in any of his 11 dual-match wins. The only dual-match set Garrapiz did lose was a second set in a suspended match against Texas’ Luis Diaz Barriga, after he had won the first frame.

With his win over 19th ranked Poole, Garrapiz earned his first career ITA singles ranking, checking in at No. 61. Garrapiz also entered the doubles rankings for the first time, listed at No. 57 with Helgeson on the back of their win over 4th-ranked Berg and Tveit.

Coming to America – Basketball player from the Czech Republic shows her new life on MTV Television

Barbara Galandakova left her native country in August in order to play college basketball in the United States. After weeks of talking to different universities during the summer, she chose Saint Francis College, a Division I university in Brooklyn, New York. MTV went to Prague to be with her in her last days with her family, and followed her through her first weeks in the United States. Tennis player Javier Bernabe, from Segovia, Spain, has lived firsthand the last tragedy occurred at an American educational institution, as the last event has happened at Northern Illinois University, where he currently is a sophomore student. Javier arrived to this school thanks to a tennis scholarship, and is currently competing in the NCAA representing this university in the State of Illinois.

Talking to Javier, he has told us how everything happened when the tennis team was practicing in the indoor courts of the university, place that was chosen by authorities as a security location inside the school. Javier and the rest of athletes are doing ok, although shocked about the fact that something like this could happened at their university.

New AGM Sports representative in Mexico

Starting in February of 2008, AGM Sports will begin to work locally in Mexico, in order to help Mexican students in finding athletic scholarships at universities in the United States. The local team will be led by Guillermo Zamarripa, a Mexican soccer player currently studying international business at New York Institute of Technology, very close to New York City. Guillermo was himself a client of AGM Sports, and is a clear example of the existing possibilities for high-level Mexican student-athletes that want to continue with their college education in the United States.

Besides Guillermo, there are two other student-athletes (tennis and cross-country) that will start college in America in August of 2008 thanks to the services provided by AGM Sports. The sports with more possibilities of scholarship for Mexican student-athletes are cross-country, tennis and soccer.

Clara Cid will run next year for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB)

Clara Cid, one of the most promising juniors in track and field in Spain, has decided to accept a cross-country scholarship at University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she will train at the highest level while she begins with her college studies. Clara is one of the top-10 runners in mid-distance in Spain, and her decision to migrate to the US will allow her to keep improving thanks to the training and competition schedules of the American College system.

The athlete from Zaragoza, Spain, combines her running skills with great performance in the classroom, as she has a GPA average equivalent to 3.5, something very difficult to do in her country, especially being an athlete. Clara wants to study Advertising and Public Relations in this university, which is located in the State of Alabama, in the Southeast of the United States. Her studies will take 4 years, time in which she will belong to the Cross-Country team thanks to an athletic scholarship.

Clara will start her academic year in the United States during the month of August, so during these coming months she will finish high-school in her native Spain and will prepare the exams needed in order to get into college, like the TOEFL and the SAT. She will also run at competitions throughout the country.
